Inspiration is Everywhere - Peacock Christmas

Peacock Colors - I’ve been a fan for a while now, judging from my closet. Jacket is on the left, and some of the fabric pull is on the right.

Welcome to July, the beginning of Christmas in July season in quilt world. Holiday fabric collections, ordered months ago is beginning to hit store shelves now to capitalize on this hard fact - you can’t start a Christmas quilt in mid-December, and have it done in time for Santa. So just about the time the last sparkler goes off, then bobbins are wound with red and green.

Or, in my case - purple and bright bright blue - which is called peacock for a reason.

At the local farm stand/ice cream emporium, this stately gent is always a treat to see. That blue almost defies description.

I had been looking on Pinterest for a very specific color idea for this project - but when you don’t know what you’re looking for - or when I don’t know what I’m looking for -it can be elusive. I had the idea that it was a non-traditional palette - I thought it was mid-century modern for some reason, but finally by searching hash tags, I found it. What I was looking for is called Peacock Christmas - with that in mind, I could search for ideas to my hearts content.

I am a very traditional Christmas-y person, and my home in New England has many variations of Red and Green holiday decor. I do find it a bit tired, and it’s hard to look for much new - truthfully I have so much I can’t put it all out now. So how do I get excited about this project?

The colors - deep opulent saturated colors of teals and deep purples, with accents of lime green, hot pink and gold tossed in. My goal is to show you projects for the holidays that can easily work into your existing holiday decor ideas - like a slightly snarky new friend who livens up a party.

The peacock which I admire so much is definitely the male of the species, which I knew. What I didn’t know until I saw one was that female peacocks are singularly a dull, monochromatic white. There’s something sad to me about that, but there’s nothing I can do to alter mother nature. Peacocks may look beautiful, but they are not (from what I’ve read) the friendliest birds on the planet. They do feast on snakes - so they do serve a purpose. They also dance with joy when it’s about to rain - which is another fun fact I learned in researching this.

So here’s the plan - over the next several weeks, I’m going to show you several projects done by me (read that, new patterns coming!) to showcase the peacock theme. Where I can, I’ll also show an alternate traditional color scheme so no one feels left out.

So until next week - where I will talk more about fabric…
