A BIG finish - Flying Abstract

As any quiltmaker knows, making a quilt is something that takes a lot of time, and energy. I never get tired of the process, but there’s always a sense of relief in meeting a deadline. That’s what I am feeling today. Flying Abstract is done (and in Houston at MD Anderson), and I can’t tell you how excited I am to share it. And how very grateful I am to Cheryl Szynkowski for her contributions to this project - her artistry truly brings this to life.

I took the basic idea of the one seam Flying Goose block that I’ve been playing with, and for this quilt, I added color blocking to the mix by using white and Turquoise as neutral backdrops to my collection of Kaffe Fasset scraps. The colors of Kaffe really pop, and provide a splash of color against an easy to live with color palette. This is a queen sized quilt, designed to be used and enjoyed - and this splash can easily fit into any room color -although if it were me, I’d paint the room one of the colors in the geese and use it like an accent.

The quilt is a generous queen size - 91” x 96”, and I added my favorite yellow Brassica fabric as an accent in the binding - it’s in the geese as well. The binding is machine applied, so that it will stand up to long term use.

Some Details for you…

The details are mostly Cheryl’s amazing custom quilting…she had seen photos of the quilt as I worked on it, and she knew about the geese, which she took as her jumping off point. I am in awe of how she takes a concept and brings it to life…it’s why I trust her so much with this project.

Flying Abstract is our donation to the MD Anderson Cancer Quilt Project for 2021. The auction will happen online in the fall, and we will be happy to share the dates and details for this fundraiser.
