What the 31 Day Blog Challenge taught me
This sticky note has been rattling around in my planner for a while, and I decided to take it out, and dust if off as I share with you some things I’ve learned about my self, my blogging habits and my business. I don’t know why I signed up to participate in Cheryl Sleboda’s #31dayblogchallenge2020 - actually, that’s not entirely accurate.
2020 was not the year I had planned out in my mind, and while some things have been deferred, other activities moved from the back burner to the front. I can’t tell you the number of times I wrote ‘write blog’ on my to do list, always letting it drift to the bottom. I needed a plan and a framework, and the Challenge provided that.
I am not a disciplined person when it comes to organizing my thoughs - or I wasn’t prior to December. I can honestly say that doing the challenge changed the way I look at information, content curation, and my relationship with my readers and viewers. In the middle of the Covid Christmas of 2020 - I found my groove (as well as organization systems, a method of organizing my calendar that works for me, and an enrhusiasm for telling people about my work. That can be terrifying, but we all know that 2020 was my year to leave fear in the rear view window.
I found that I got some surprising results - more pageviews, more Instagram likes, more views on the Wednesday livestreams, and more interaction. The blog post which generated the most response - and which will lead to a follow up in February - was the blog post on how I organize my sewing needles. There’s a whole other side to that story - which will lead to a deep dive soon.
Blogging for 30 out of 31 days was required me to pull out all my scheduling tricks, and to admit that sometimes I can be undisciplined about schedules. I have learned that I am much more relaxed about the writing when I put the post up the night before. That’s a pace I can’t keep up over the long haul, however - and I am happy to let the posting schedule drop back to about once a week or so on this site.
It was nice to close out 2020 with such a big accomplishment done, and to look forward to new blogging topics for 2021. If there’s something you’d like to hear from me about, please leave me a comment below.
