Lesson Learned: an #IGQUILTFEST2023 post

Thoughts on an important Lesson I have learned

I’ve been participating in the IG Quiltfest over on Instagram this month - it’s wonderful to meet and celebrate quilters from all over the world over there.  I’m finding as I wind down the last days of winter, I’m craving the human connection. Today’s prompt is Lesson Learned, and it’s one  that (as it turns out) I have a few thoughts about,  which I’d like to share here.

That’s the lesson…

Quilting has taught me many lessons, but the lesson that I want to share is to Just Be You. It seems so simple, yet in reality I’ve struggled with it. In a community of quilters, many of whom share their best works online (because you know social media isn’t real, right?), it’s easy to feel that you aren’t as skilled at x or as talented as ABC quilter.  I’ve actually learned something from every quilt I’ve ever started.

Earlier this week, on day 6, I shared the struggle of quilting my Dream Big panel. In reality, there was nothing stopping me from quilting it but me. I got in my own darn way…until I didn’t.

Everyone’s journey in quilting is unique to them. I’m the first generation in my family to take this up, and I didn’t start until I was an adult.  My grandmother taught me that you can learn something everyday, and I try to look at quilting from that viewpoint.

Is there a technique you want to try but you don’t think you can do it. You absolutely can, but you need to be willing to stink at it first. Don’t let the fear stop you from trying.

You might surprise yourself with what you can do!

As women,  I believe that we should be honoring, respecting and supporting each other – not looking for differences and fostering divisions. I am working on accepting myself honestly, and authentically so that I can then take the next steps on my journey.

So my question to you tonight is – how can I help you on your journey? Drop me an email, or leave a comment.

And are you following – or participating in the #IGQuiltfest? It IS fun.
