As I began accumulating my stash over lo, these many years, I was a round it up to the next full yard kind of girl. In the photo below, you can see my jam packed shelves with 3 different storage solutions. Fabrics that I have more than 1 yard of (but less than a full bolt) are stacked horizontally on boards. My yardage (you can see blacks and grayish stacks) are folded by the ruler method and stacked. I am not sure, but I think I am set for several lifetimes at this point. And you can see my solution for Fat Quarter storage.

Yes, you can. I store them in photo boxes, segregated by color. I would have preferred to get all white boxes, but they were on sale for $1 each last year at Michaels, and I knew I could fit 8 boxes in that shelf. Two trips, and $8 later - and i have my fats organized. If you were to look at my stacks of yardage, you would notice that I have no purple stacks. I wondered about that (at 2 AM one morning), until I went back and realized that I have 2 boxes for purple.

You can put a lot of fabrics into a storage box, and at one point I tried a rough calculation as to how much I had. Then I recalculated. Oh, my. Imelda Marcos had shoes, I have fabric - that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Over the years, I’ve seen many storage options for fabric - and while I would love to have wire baskets sorted by color, this system works for me. And there’s a part of me that likes to have the Fats stored away out of sight. If I had them all out in plain sight, I think I would have sensory overload more than I do.

When working on a fabric pull, I go first to the Fat quarters to pull from there, then to the scraps, and then finally to the yardage. That gives me a great mixture of colors, and in my world, the more fabrics, the more fun.

Because I want to be completely open and transporent, not everything is rosy here at WWHQ.
